Contractor or employee?

Calling someone a contractor doesn’t make them one. The IRS, the Department of Labor and states look at the real relationship: who controls how the work is done, whether the worker has their own business, and how permanent the relationship is. Misclassification can lead to back taxes and penalties.

Get the scope right

Most freelancer disputes are about scope. List deliverables, number of revisions and deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to send a 1099?

Generally, if you pay a contractor $600 or more in a year for business services, you file a Form 1099-NEC (check the current IRS rules).
